Music Video due at end of class today (Fri. 5.20)!

When you've finished editing, adding credits, and you've proofed your video:

Step 1. Go to the "Share" menu in iMovie.

Step 2. Choose "Export using Quick Time".

Step 3. Name the project after your song, and save to the desktop. Don't change the settings.

Step 4. Wait. It will take at least 5 minutes to export your movie file to the desktop.

Step 5. Copy the movie file from the desktop to one of my portable hard drives.

That's it! Congratulations!
If you have extra time, you can compress the movie and put it on your phone, ipod or YouTube/Vimeo account. Enjoy!

Because you don't have enough to worry about....

I've made a list of students who paid their $10 Materials Fee for the course this year (thanks!). Everyone else will have a $10 Fine attached to their account, which will hold up grades, registration, and...eventually...graduation.
Remember, this fee barely covers repairs (like the busted tripods, camera chargers, and boom poles I've been finding), SD Cards (which you keep losing), batteries (which you've used up), DVD's (again, all you) and printing supplies (which you've used all year).
We don't receive any money from the school to pay for this stuff, so it's all sustained by fees. I dare say, after 9 months in the class, you've gotten your $10 worth. If you pay the fee by Monday, I won't turn in the fine on your account. Otherwise, it will be a hold on your records.
Thanks for your help in making sure we can continue to offer a quality experience to our students.

Final Exam Schedule

Drag the schedule to your desktop and open in Preview to view full size.

Editing Music Video

Today we'll spend class time editing your video.

Step 1:
Create a new Project in iMovie (standard format, no theme)

Step 2:
Import your song from iTunes into iMovie, and add to the Project.

Step 3:
Begin building your Music Video clip-by-clip, to match with the music.

Students will alternate editing every 10 minutes. One team member should be in charge of writing down full credits, checking spelling, and researching publishing info for your song.

The final Music Video is due at the end of class on Friday. Any student not participating in the editing process, or found to be off-task, will receive a Zero for the project.

Wrap shooting on Music Video

Monday 5/16 is the LAST class period we'll use to shoot your music video. If you wish to check out equipment to shoot elsewhere, it must be done on an overnight basis only, and returned the next morning. We'll edit on Wednesday, and you'll need to turn in your finished video on Friday as a Quick Time file.

Make sure you have all of the relevant info for your song credits (see original MV blog post for more info), as this constitutes part of your grade.

Happy shooting!

Storyboards Due Today!

You MUST submit your completed storyboard to Ms. Kurland before the end of class today, Friday May 6th. We started them in Celtx on Wednesday, and Ms. Kurland can help answer questions to complete them.

  • Remember, you must LABEL each shot and type a description of the action happening in that scene, on EVERY SHOT.
  • Your storyboard must have AT LEAST 12 SHOTS.
  • You must use at least 8 DIFFERENT SHOT TYPES.
  • Your team MUST work on the Storyboard TOGETHER---no team members on another computer, or goofing off. If Ms. Kurland writes your name down for any reason, your team gets a ZERO on the Storyboard, which you cannot make up.
  • Make sure you print to the ".88" printer/ HP Color Laser Jet. Staple pages and label with team names, and place in my black basket.
We WILL begin filming on Monday. Be ready, or be penalized on your filming grade! If your team is not ready to film, you will receive a Zero for that day and be given BOOK WORK.

Music Video Project

Today we'll discuss your final Video Project of the Semester: The Music Video.
Worth 200 points, your final video must contain the following:

1. A song, no more than 4 minutes long, that contains a POSITIVE MESSAGE. You must submit your song for approval, including a printed copy of the lyrics, before filming. You may not use a song that contains explicit or offensive lyrics, including curse words, references to drugs/gangs/violence, etc. I will not approve songs that promote hate, discrimination or violence against any individual or group of people based on gender, race, religion, etc.

2. You must assemble a team of at least 4 people to help film your project. ALL TEAM MEMBERS MUST PARTICIPATE IN FILMING TO RECEIVE CREDIT. At least 80% of the final footage must be shot during class time.

3. Your team must use glamour and/or sfx makeup, wardrobe, at least one PROP, and have at least 1 scene change.

4. Your team MUST complete, and adhere to, a 12-frame storyboard that shows key frames linked to specific points in the song. You will be heavily graded on composition for this project, and MUST use at least 8 distinctly different shot types in the final film.

5. You will be graded on the quality of your editing. I discourage you from shooting "sing-along" style videos, as they are exceptionally hard to sync. Your team will be penalized for jump/rough cuts, breaks in continuity or lack of coherence. In other words, the final product must be edited to flow smoothly and make sense.

6. Your credits must be professional, and include the song name, band/artist name, album name, copyright year and the copyright holder. If you cannot find this info during the initial research phase, do not use that song.

Prod Hierarchy: Top Down Mgmt. SCAVENGER HUNT!

Hey all! Today we'll start "at the top", so to speak, learning about the people who are really in control of getting a movie production "green lit" to begin planning and filming. These folks (referred to as "Above the Line") are the movers, shakers, and money behind most films, both Big $ and small (indie).

We're going to start using the "Anatomy of a Film Set" series. Click on the link below:

http://www.mefeedia.com/watch/28111995

Once we've completed Exec. Prod., Prod., Loc. Scout, and Director, it's time to divide into 4 groups to complete a Scavenger Hunt! You'll get a copy of "Boom!" magazine from me, and your team will conduct an IMDB search to find something that each of those people has worked on. Use the following resources:
http://www.imdb.com/

BONUS 5 pts. to the team that finishes first!

Advocate! Advocate! Advocate!

From crewnewmexico.blogspot.com:

Copy and paste into your email, complete with your info and (polite, respectful, succinct) comments, and send to the email addresses of the senators listed on the blog site above:

Dear

I am a New Mexico film student, and I ask for your support in defeating Senate Bill 235. Film is an integral and important part of the New Mexico economy, and I am relying on it for my career.

Senate Bill 235 would shortcut all that I am studying for, and put a heavy burden on all those in New Mexico who benefit from this dynamic industry.

If you have been a supporter of film in the past, I would like to thank you, and encourage your continued support. If you are in favor of 235, I would like to ask that you please evaluate the significant impact your position would have on one of New Mexico's most productive and economically viable industries, and please vote against this bill.

I welcome and appreciate your support on this critical matter.

Respectfully,

FOLEY!

COpy and Paste this link:

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=7400850

Common Foley Tricks

· Corn starch in a leather pouch makes the sound of snow crunching

· A pair of gloves sounds like bird wings flapping

· An arrow or thin stick makes a great whoosh

· An old chair makes a controllable creaking sound

· A water soaked rusty hinge when placed against different surfaces makes a great creaking sound. Different surfaces change the sound considerably

· A heavy staple gun combined with other small metal sounds make good gun noises

· A metal rake makes a great fence sound (it can also make a great metallic screech when dragged across a piece of metal)

· A heavy car door and fender can create most of the car sounds needed but having a whole car in the studio is better

· ¼” audio tape balled up sounds like grass or brush when walked on

· Gelatin and hand soap make great squishing noises

· Frozen romaine lettuce makes great bone or head injury noises

· Coconut shells cut in half and stuffed with padding makes great horse hoof noises

· Cellophane creates crackling fire effects

· A selection of wooden and metal doors are needed to create all sorts of door noises but also can be used for creaking boat sounds

· A heavy phone book makes great body punching sounds

HEY! 'member those lovely little movies you made? give 'em a home!

The Albuquerque independent film community in action!

A message to all members of Indie Q

From Fans of Film:

The Fans Of Film Show is being produced for local TV networks and the web! The show is asking for 10 min filmmaker interviews and reels, 1 1/2 min shorts of any genre, and fan videos shouting "we love movies" and what your favorite movie is. All videos can be be posted to our Youtube Channel, or in the forum or just give Michael a call at 505 934 7592 and make arrangements to drop of at the studio. The best videos we receive go on the show!!

The Fans Of Film Show will provide different content than any other film show as we highlight filmmakers, films, film sites, film resources, film profiles on Twitter, and any other film related stuff we may happen to wanna throw on the show, including some live action and animated content. A social media experiment and one of the the first true social productions of it's kind in Albuquerque and on the web.

Note: Everyday we talk to somebody that doesn't know about some of the cool independent films self distributing online, in our opinion there is still a huge disconnect with fans and the independent film movement online. It will be our continuing effort to support the filmmaking community, and to promote the highest quality entertainment and future projects.

If you would like to get involved or support this project give Michael a call or visit the campaign page on Indiegogo athttp://www.indiegogo.com/The-Fans-Of-Film-Show

Vocab Study Group

Check SnapGrades: If you earned a 70% or below on the latest vocab test, you'll be paired with another student (someone who earned a 90 or above), who will help you use the textbook and other resources to find the definitions for the terms you missed. You'll retest at the end of next week.

Peer Mentors: I'll coach you to direct your study buddy toward the resources they need; please don't just GIVE them the answers. At this point, if they don't understand/remember the term, they clearly need to review the material in its original context in order to integrate this information. I'll be offering you extra credit for this, but ONLY if you do it the right way, k? Thx.

Santa Fe Signup

See me today if you wish to sign up for the trip to Santa Fe on Film & Media Day, Feb. 16th.
Please be advised of the following:

We will only take students who are interested in participating in an ENTIRE DAY of workshops, tours, networking, and advocating for programs like ours and the preservation of Film Incentives in New Mexico. You'll be working with adults all day long, and must stay focused and professional at all times.

I'd like to accommodate those people interested in touring the Santa Fe University of Art & Design campus, but you must be able to walk for 90 minutes without issues.

10 students will be handpicked from this group to speak to the New Mexico State Legislature---all of our State Senators and Representatives---about the importance of Film Incentives and the relationship of Film Education programs (like our Academy) to the preservation of those incentives. I will be auditioning students personally.

This is your chance to participate in your community, in the political system, and to meet lots of interesting people in the film industry. Sign up with me today; I will cap the list at 40 people.

Welcome Back!

This first week we'll look at our plans for this coming semester, revisit what we learned in the fall and transition into working with Audio as an aspect of filmmaking.

Stuff to tackle:
1. Review your performance last semester; write a short reflection and Spring Plan.
2. Lighting post-test! OMG!
3. Bringing it together: How does mood lighting REALLY look?
4. YOU SAID IT! 3 types of audio for film. Look at some examples of Dialog, Ambient Noise and Sound Effects/ADR.
